Love them? Walter shook his head. He had never known love in his life so to expect it randomly from strangers? No. It didn't work that way. They had everything to gain from lying, such as Wrath's naive, unquestioning obedience. He leaned down to whisper to Wrath, hair falling around his face as Darkness kept lookout for him.
"They do not love us Wrath. We are a means to an end. If we had no use for them, they wouldn't care at all. And being nice now doesn't mean they will be later."
And even then that wasn't a promise of being cared for. But Walter had been taught that God loved all Her followers; not just him for awakening Her. The Mother's love was protective and embracing. This was not that love. And...it wasn't love, but the feeling he had for Wrath was something. He knew that these people had nothing like it towards any of them.
