Summary: It's Steven's dead baby sister's birthday and he can't deal with it soberly, especially not when she was just here and gone for the Fourth Wall. His fellow tabletop Rockets aren't letting him get blackout drunk alone.

Dime bags of persim berry drugs and rolling papers... wine from Olivine City... vodka and shot glasses by way of Melissa... a six pack of beer bottles courtesy of Tyler... the coffee table in Handsome Jack's living room is pretty much covered by various methods of intoxication.

It probably won't all be consumed by the end of the night--but it's highly likely that they'll make a significant dent in it. For at least one person here, it's really not a night to stay sober.

And, well, it's an opportunity to socialize with some coworkers, some of whom have just found out that they're from the same world--but it's definitely not a work thing.

By the time the hangout/party/whatever this properly starts, Melissa has already had... several shots of vodka. Luckily, Melissa is a generally pleasant drunk, and therefore this might actually be a better way to be introduced to her than her normal, highly bitchy self.

She's probably not going to partake in the drugs- she has no idea what that is and does not trust it, but alcohol is fair game. ...She's still not the most chatty, but at least introductions will not be made through glowering right now.

Luckily Tyler has been forewarned that she's drunk, and sits across from her so she doesn't have to crane too hard to see him. Not that he's bothering with sign at this point; he just wants to make sure she sees Isis staring at her as he leans forward to pick a beer.

Think you're holding out okay so far?

Steven's had about as many vodka shots pre-gathering as Melissa has, plus a very fat joint of pokeweed, and although he isn't slurring anything and he's more or less keeping upright and steady, he's the furthest thing from sober.

Which. Well. Means that he's also completely and utterly without a verbal filter. He tends to self-censor less around friends anyway, particularly if he counts them to be be good ones, like Tyler and Lydia, but this is probably something of a revelation to Melissa, who's merely seen him tipsy enough to relax into being a bit of a catty bitch.

(If he makes it the end of the night without a single disturbing offhand comment, it'll be a surprise.)

Tyler arrives a bit early, as is his wont, in a cute outfit with a six-pack under his arm and Isis squishing comfortably into a ball on his shoulder, half-tucked under the overlarge collar of his shirt. He has to remind the small bird to stay awake, when they walk into the house: he's not counting on anyone to remember to sign at him at all, especially if substances are involved.

He's certainly not going to do the drugs - he knows what he's like on it already, there's no curiosity there and he'd rather not risk an addiction - but he'll drink a bit. Enough to participate, not enough to get truly wasted.

"Hey Tyler," Steven starts out saying aloud when he greets him at the door--and then he frowns and his eyes cross and he signs, somewhat exaggeratedly as he leads him to the living room.

You need to meet Melissa. She's from our world, but she had vampire bullshit instead of fairy bullshit.

... he probably means vampire anyway. Instead of the actual sign, he'd mimed fangs with his fingers.

He makes sure to sign slowly and clearly maybe condescendingly for Steven. Just use your words, Steven. We've already met, anyway.

"I didn't know that," Steven protests, and even though he's still signing, Isis will be able to tell that he's saying the words out loud too. "And I'd like to see you do so well after as many shots we dedicated to telling vampires to get fucked."

Isis isn't sure what to do, with this, so her eyes crease a little and she translates anyway. Which means Tyler is more or less experiencing this in double time and he seriously has to wonder if this is what it's like for hearing people all the time. He hates it.

So he just smacks Steven's hands away. I'm sure you'll tell me exactly how many later, but use your words to do it. Seriously.

"Asshole," Steven says, mildly, but at least he stopped signing at the same time.

He's genuinely considering just switching to telepathy for the rest of tonight. But he's chill enough when he signs again.

I'm glad you guys are finding something to bond over, he says instead.

"Me too," Steven replies. "So--when did you get to know Melissa, anyway?"

We met in the park outside of work. I wasn't sure until she said she'd only been in Goldenrod for the past few weeks, he explains. Statistically speaking, she wasn't likely to not be a Rocket at that point.

"Right," Steven says. "Which is why I usually try to remind them to pretend they hitchhiked from Route 29 if the subject comes up—ah hell, did I forget that with Melissa? I found her in the training class. I try to check in with the trainers once a week to see if there's any more newbies."
